I always had a passion for health, physical fitness, and good food! I love to eat and I love to cook and sharing those passions with family and friends have always been a big part of my life.
Since the time I was 8 years old I have had, what’s considered an auto-immune disease, called alopecia areata. The main symptom of this “dis-ease” is losing one’s hair. For me it started as small patches and by the time I reached my mid-thirties, I had lost all of my hair, including eyelashes, eyebrows and all of my head hair (a mixed blessing perhaps…I’ve rarely needed to shave my legs)!
My entire life, the doctors and ‘specialists’ in the study of alopecia, have said they don’t know why it happens or how to cure it but ‘we’re getting closer’. I’ve heard we’re getting closer for 36 years. Yet deep down I always believed I would discover for myself, what my own body needed to heal. So I learned how to live with this and have lived a very full life inspite of it.
In the winter of 2008, I began having severe digestive issues. After seeing a gastroenterologists, having a colonoscopy and being told I have IBS yet was never asked what I eat, I was sent home without any guidance or direction. I spent about a year and a half experimenting with different foods and struggling to bring harmony and healing to my digestion.
In my intense search for answers regarding my digestive issues and reading about the damage done to the ‘hair-like’ structures in the intestines, with Celiac disease (allergy to wheat, barley and rye), I wondered if there was a connection between Celiac and Alopecia. Much to my amazement, I discovered some studies there were conducted about 15 years ago linking celiac and alopecia. Since reading these studies, I have gone on a strict gluten-free diet and much to my shock, delight and amazement, my hair is beginning to grow back!
